Hey everyone. IDW is set to release TMNT #1 on August 24, 2011. While this is great news for TMNT comics fans, what you may not realize is that #1 is being issued with multiple variant covers – way more than the Creed/TMNT crossover. As a TMNT comics “completist” it’s been absolutely mind-numbing trying to decipher how many covers are being released and then figuring out how to acquire them. I’ve spent weeks gathering this information and I finally have it nailed down (see details below).
- Cover A (Dan Duncan) – Raphael; regular cover shipped in a 1:1:1:1 ratio (A, B, C, D) when ordered (i.e., if you ordered only 1 copy of #1 you could get either Cover A, B, C, or D).
- Cover A Newsstand (Dan Duncan) - Raphael; newsstand edition distributed only to newsstand retailers (primarily Barnes & Noble)
- Cover B (Dan Duncan) - Donatello; regular cover shipped in a 1:1:1:1 ratio (A, B, C, D) when ordered (i.e., if you ordered only 1 copy of #1 you could get either Cover A, B, C, or D).
- Cover C (Dan Duncan) – Leonardo; regular cover shipped in a 1:1:1:1 ratio (A, B, C, D) when ordered (i.e., if you ordered only 1 copy of #1 you could get either Cover A, B, C, or D).
- Cover D (Dan Duncan) – Michelangelo; regular cover shipped in a 1:1:1:1 ratio (A, B, C, D) when ordered (i.e., if you ordered only 1 copy of #1 you could get either Cover A, B, C, or D).
- Cover RI A (Kevin Eastman) – 10 copy incentive (i.e., for every 10 copies of Cover A, B, C, or D purchased, retailers receive one copy of TMNT #1 with this cover).
- Cover RI B (Dan Duncan) – all 4 Dan Duncan covers (Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo) in a double gate-fold cover layout; 20 copy incentive (i.e., for every 20 copies of Cover A, B, C, or D purchased, retailers receive one copy of TMNT #1 with this cover).
- Cover RI C (Sam Kieth) – 25 copy incentive (i.e., for every 25 copies of Cover A, B, C, or D purchased, retailers receive one copy of TMNT #1 with this cover).
- Cover RI D (Kevin Eastman) – hand-drawn sketch variant edition; 50 copy incentive (i.e., for every 50 copies of Cover A, B, C, or D purchased, retailers receive one copy of TMNT #1 with this cover); no picture other than group. **ships up to 90 days beyond scheduled release date (UPDATE: Released Dec. 28, 2011)
- Cover RE Ashcan (Kevin Eastman) – ashcan edition; given away at SDCC 2011.
- Cover RE Jetpack Comics (Peter Laird) – Jetpack Comics; available for purchase only via Jetpack Comics.
- Cover RE NECRA (Dan Duncan) – NECRA Exclusive (a.k.a., Larry’s Comics Exclusive Edition); available for purchase via Jetpack Comics or Larry’s Comics.
- Cover RE Detroit Fanfare (Dan Duncan) – Detroit Fanfare (a.k.a. Wonderworld Comics) exclusive variant edition (more info. here). No purchase link is currently known but the Wonderworld site is here.
- Cover RE Hastings (Dan Duncan) – Hastings variant edition; available at any of the Hastings Entertainment owned stores (e.g., Hastings or Tradesmart).
- Global Conquest (Kevin Eastman) - International Edition issued to markets outside the U.S.A.
- 2nd printing (Kevin Eastman) – B&W sketch version of the Eastman RI A cover with red lettering; released Oct. 12, 2011
- 3rd printing (Kevin Eastman) - B&W sketch version of the Eastman RI A cover with bright green lettering; released Nov. 2, 2011
- HCF Trick-or-Treat Edition - Halloween Comicfest 2012 version of the TMNT #1 Eastman RI A incentive cover with a variant green/orange Halloween-themed color-scheme; released Sept. 26, 2012.

Hey! I could have sworn I’ve been to this page before but after reading much of the material realized I had never been here before. I added it to my bookmarks and will be sharing it with a couple of buddies. Thanks for the great site! Time to get back to these wonderful beaches in Brazil!
Glad you found the site and it’s great to have you here. Enjoy those beaches!!
Helpful information. Lucky me I found your website by accident, and I’m stunned why this coincidence didn’t took place earlier! I bookmarked it.
Great! Welcome…glad you enjoy it and it’s useful.
Wow good to see them all
God knows how someone outside of the US such as myself, let alone those who live in the US, are supposed to get all of these! eBay ahoy perhaps, but a comic distro I know here has got a couple of the limited ones in stock, if quite pricy…
No kidding! Even for those of us in the U.S. it’s been very difficult tracking some of these down. Best of luck in acquiring all of them. Thanks for reading!
You’re welcome. I’ve emailed a few of my usual online UK comic haunts to see what they might be getting in. I’ve also emailed the place that I saw had the NECRO and Jetpack covers in stock to see what else they might possess. I’ve only seen one auction for cover F and G so far, hopefully more might appear down the line.
Thanks for the info. I have such a hard time finding out if there’s a better way to obtain the Dan Duncan covers other than buying all 4 copies.
NECRA blank cover is also being distro by Larrys Comics and The Detroit fanfare is being distoed by wonderland. I emailed Larry at Larry comics and Kevin at Wonderland to confirm this.
They aren’t separate covers so it might be best to combine a couple of your listings as it currently makes it appear there’s more variants then there are.
This website is the bomb! Thank the Gods that someone has assembled such a resource, makes my life a lot easier.
So glad you like the blog and I’m very glad it’s been helpful. As a bonus, I just updated this post with some new information. I think I’ve targeted all the variants now (and there are a LOT). Thanks for reading!
Thanks Eric for this information. I’ll have to research how to get the Hastings and Detroit Fanfare copies. Appreciate the information.
so cover k is actually the detroit fanfare exclusive(not the necra, which is the green cover) and the other “unknown” cover (blue, with 4 turtles) must be the hastings exclusive
found this on an idw forum:
Here’s all the covers for #1:
-Leo (by Dan Duncan)
-Don (Duncan)
-Raph (Duncan)
-Mike (Duncan)
-Eastman (‘order 10′ retail incentive)
-Gatefold w/ all 4 of Duncan’s covers (‘order 20′ retail incentive)
-Sam Kieth (‘order 25′ retail incentive)
-Hand drawn Eastman sketch cover (‘order 50′ retail incentive)
So that’s 8 normal covers.
In addition to those, there are four retail exclusive covers, which means if a store, or group of stores, order enough copies, then they get their own, made-to-order cover. Those RE covers are:
-Hastings
-Jet Pack Comics
-NECRA (North East Comic Retailers Association, I think)
-Detroit Fanfare.
That’s it!
Hey Eric, thanks for the tip on that eBay auction. The Jetpack comics site does mention something about the back cover (http://www.jetpackcomics.com/index.html) so you may be right on that. I guess we’ll just need to wait a few more weeks until they’re all released to be sure. I’ll update the post if I find out more. Thanks for reading.
although, the back cover of the necra variant in the auction differs from the one pictured here. is it possible that the one in this picture is yet another variant, and not the necra as listed above?? gotta say, i’m super excited to have tmnt comics to collect again, and similar to you, i have every intention of tracking down every cover available, but this is starting to get crazy!! still loving every second of it of course!!
according to this ebay auction – http://cgi.ebay.com/Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-1-TMNT-HTF-NECRA-Sketch-/110724115663?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c7abeccf – the green cover with all 4 turtles is the front cover of the necra edition variant with the blank/roof art as the back cover. ??
